Carpet Tile Installation in Richmond

Carpet tile gives you soft, warm flooring in squares you can lift and replace one at a time. We explain the backing, the pattern options and the adhesive in plain terms, then lay it flat and tight so the seams stay quiet.

What carpet tile is, and when it makes sense

Carpet tile is carpet made in squares or planks, usually 18 or 24 inches across, with a stiff backing that holds its shape. Instead of stretching one big piece over pad and tack strip, each tile sits flat on the floor and is held in place with a release adhesive. If one gets stained or damaged, you lift that tile and set in a spare.

It works well in game rooms, home offices, playrooms and bonus rooms, where spills happen and chairs roll. It is firmer than broadloom carpet over a thick pad, so for a bedroom where you want that sink-in feel, our carpet installation service may suit you better. We will tell you honestly which one fits the room.

We have been in business 25+ years, and the question we hear most about carpet tile is whether it will look like an office. It does not have to. Residential lines come in softer textures and warmer colors, and the layout pattern you choose changes the look more than most people expect.

What our carpet tile installation includes

Checking the slab for moisture

Most homes around Richmond sit on concrete slabs, and moisture rising through concrete can weaken adhesive and leave a musty smell. We test before anything is glued and tell you what we found.

Removing the old floor

We pull up old carpet, pad and tack strip, scrape leftover glue and haul it all away. Tiles go down on a clean surface, not over debris.

Leveling high and low spots

Carpet tile is thin, so a ridge or dip in the slab can show through over time. We grind down high spots and fill low ones with patching compound.

Laying out from the center

We snap chalk lines from the middle of the room so the cut tiles at the walls come out even on both sides. You avoid a thin sliver along one wall.

Release adhesive, not permanent glue

We use a tackifier, a pressure-sensitive adhesive that keeps tiles from sliding but lets you lift one later. In plain terms, it holds like a sticky note rather than like glue.

Transitions and spare tiles

We fit trim where carpet tile meets tile, vinyl or wood. Before we leave, we set aside spare tiles from the same dye lot so future replacements match.

Signs carpet tile may be the right floor for you

Spills are part of daily life
Kids, pets and drinks in a game room add up. With carpet tile, a bad stain means swapping one square instead of replacing the whole room.
Old stains keep coming back
When a spill soaks into pad, it can wick back up after cleaning. Carpet tile has no separate pad to hold liquid underneath.
A desk chair has worn a path
Rolling chairs crush carpet fibers in one spot. Tiles from that area can be rotated with tiles from under a bookcase to even out wear.
The room sits on bare concrete
A converted garage or bonus room can feel cold and echo. Carpet tile, especially with a cushion backing, is warmer and quieter underfoot than hard flooring.

How a carpet tile job goes

  1. 1

    A conversation by phone

You tell us about the room, who uses it and what is on the floor now. We explain the main choices in plain words so you know what to look at before we visit.

  2. 2

    Measuring and choosing a layout

At your home we measure, check the slab and bring samples. We explain the layouts: monolithic, where every arrow points the same way and it looks like wall-to-wall carpet, quarter-turn, where each tile rotates for a checkerboard texture that hides seams, and brick, where rows are offset. You get a written estimate.

  3. 3

    Install day

We clear and prep the floor, roll out the tackifier and wait until it turns clear and tacky. Then we set tiles from the center lines outward and cut the edges to fit. A single room is often finished in one day.

  4. 4

    Walkthrough and cleanup

We vacuum, clear out the scraps and walk the room with you. We show you where the spares are and how to lift a tile if you ever need to.

What moves the price of carpet tile

We do not give a number before seeing the room, because the slab and the tile you pick shape the price as much as square footage does. Here is what makes the biggest difference, so your written estimate makes sense when it arrives.

The tile you choose
Face weight, the amount of yarn per square yard, affects both feel and price. A cushion backing costs more than a hard backing but feels softer underfoot.
Condition of the slab
A flat, dry slab needs little prep. Cracks, ridges or high moisture readings add leveling work or a moisture barrier.
What comes up first
Loose carpet and pad come out quickly. Glued-down vinyl or old ceramic tile takes more labor to remove and scrape clean.
Room shape and pattern
Closets, angled walls and a brick layout mean more cuts and some extra waste. A simple rectangle in quarter-turn uses tile most efficiently.

Carpet tile questions we hear often

Can I replace a damaged tile myself?
Yes, that is one of the best parts of carpet tile. Slide a putty knife under a corner, lift the tile and press a spare into the same spot, matching the arrow direction on the back. The release adhesive stays tacky for a long time, so the new tile grips without extra glue in most cases.
Is carpet tile a good idea on a concrete slab?
It can be, as long as the slab is dry and reasonably flat. That is why we test moisture and check for high spots before we install. If the room still feels cool, a cushion-backed tile adds warmth and softness.
How soon can we use the room?
Because the adhesive is already tacky when tiles go down, you can usually walk on the floor right away. We will tell you on the day when it is fine to roll heavy furniture back in, based on the adhesive we used.
Can carpet tile go on stairs?
Carpet tile is made to lie flat, not to wrap around a stair nose, so it tends to lift at the edges there. For stairs, our stair flooring service covers options built for treads and risers. We can match colors so the stairs and the room above still feel connected.
What happens if something goes wrong after you leave?
Our labor comes with a 1-year workmanship warranty on all installations. If a seam opens or a tile lifts because of how we installed it, we come back and fix it. We also carry insurance while we work in your home, so you are not left holding the bill if something gets damaged during the job.
