Vinyl Composition Tile in Richmond, TX

Vinyl composition tile, or VCT, is the hard-wearing tile you have walked on in schools and stores for decades. In your home it makes a durable, easy-to-patch floor for busy rooms. We explain how it differs from luxury vinyl and what upkeep it asks for before you choose.

What VCT is and when it makes sense

VCT is a 12 by 12 inch tile made mostly of limestone filler bound with vinyl resin and color. It is solid all the way through, so a scuff or chip shows the same color underneath instead of a printed photo layer. That is why it holds up under bikes, toolboxes, kids' toys and pets.

It is not the same product as luxury vinyl tile. LVT has a printed wood or stone look and a factory wear layer. VCT has a flatter, speckled look and needs a few coats of floor finish to keep its shine and resist stains. If you want something you never have to polish, our Luxury Vinyl Tile or Luxury Vinyl Plank pages are a better fit.

Where VCT shines in a home: garages turned into game rooms, laundry and mud rooms, workshops, home gyms and retro kitchens with a classic checkerboard. It is also simple to fix later, since one damaged tile can be heated, lifted and replaced.

What your VCT installation includes

A look at your slab or subfloor

Most homes around here sit on concrete slabs. We check for cracks, high spots and old adhesive, because VCT is thin and every bump telegraphs through it.

Moisture check on concrete

Our Gulf Coast humidity can push moisture up through a slab. We test before we glue, since moisture is the most common reason VCT adhesive lets go and tiles start to lift at the edges.

Patching and smoothing

We fill cracks and low spots with a cement-based patch and smooth it flat. This step takes the most care and makes the biggest difference in how the finished floor looks.

Layout and pattern

We snap layout lines from the center of the room so cut tiles at the walls come out even. Two-color checkerboards, borders or a scattered accent tile are all easy with VCT.

Adhesive, rolling and finish

Tiles go down in a thin, even coat of VCT adhesive and get rolled so they bond fully. Once set, we apply coats of floor finish so the surface is sealed and ready to use.

Signs VCT could be the right floor for you

  • Your current floor takes a beating

If carpet is stained or laminate is swelling in a garage conversion or utility room, a dense, solid tile handles grit and rolling loads much better.

  • You want easy spot repairs

Dropped a wrench or dragged a washer across the floor? With VCT we replace the one tile instead of the whole room.

  • You like a classic look

Checkerboard kitchens and diner-style colors are a natural VCT look, and the color runs through the tile so it does not wear off.

  • Old 9 by 9 tiles are coming up

Older square tiles in this size can contain asbestos. Leave them alone and have them tested before anyone scrapes or sands, then we can talk about laying over them or replacing them.

How the work goes in your home

  1. 1

    A phone conversation first

You tell us the room and how you use it. We explain what VCT will and will not do there, and if another floor suits you better, we say so.

  2. 2

    Measure and check the slab

We measure the space, look at what is on the floor now and check moisture. You get a clear written breakdown of the prep, material and labor.

  3. 3

    Prep day

We move what needs moving, remove the old flooring if it is safe to do so, and patch and smooth the slab. Dust is kept to the work area and we clean as we go.

  4. 4

    Install and finish

Tiles are laid, rolled and trimmed at the edges, then finish coats go on. Most rooms are ready for light foot traffic the next day, and we will tell you when furniture can go back.

    Walkthrough and care tips

We walk the floor with you and explain simple upkeep: a damp mop with a neutral cleaner and an occasional fresh coat of finish when the shine dulls.

What moves the price of a VCT floor

VCT tile itself is one of the more affordable flooring materials, so on many jobs the prep work shapes the price more than the tile does. We look at your actual floor before giving a number, and the written breakdown shows each part so nothing comes as a surprise.

Slab condition
A clean, flat slab needs little work. Cracks, dips or thick old glue add patching and grinding time.
What comes up first
Pulling carpet is quick. Old tile, sheet vinyl or anything needing testing adds steps before we can start.
Room size and shape
Square footage matters, and so do cabinets, closets and doorways that mean more cuts.
Pattern and colors
A single color goes fastest. Checkerboards and borders take more layout time and sometimes more tile.

VCT questions we hear often

Something not covered here? (346) 480-5524

Is VCT the same thing as luxury vinyl?

No. VCT is a solid, limestone-based tile with a speckled look that needs floor finish. Luxury vinyl has a printed wood or stone image under a factory wear layer and needs no polish. We are glad to walk you through both by phone.

How much upkeep does VCT really need?

Day to day, sweep and damp mop with a neutral cleaner. Over time the finish wears in busy paths, and a fresh coat brings the shine back. A home floor needs far less of this than a grocery aisle does.

Can you put VCT over my existing floor?

Sometimes. It can go over a sound, well-bonded, smooth hard surface, but not over cushioned vinyl, carpet or anything loose. We check what you have and tell you honestly whether it should come up.

Will VCT work in my garage?

It is a common choice for garages and workshops because it shrugs off dropped tools and rolling carts. Hot tires parked on it can leave marks, so it suits a garage used as a gym or shop better than one for daily parking.

What happens if a tile lifts after you leave?

Every installation we do comes with a 1-year workmanship warranty, so if a tile lifts because of how it was put down, we come back and fix it. We have been in business 25+ years and we are insured, so you know who stands behind the floor.
